Chinese artists

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1860

The pictures here were produced by Chinese artists working in the European style and date to the 1860s. They show two ships in similar positions off Hong Kong. It seems likely judging by the styles that these two pictures were painted by different artists.

Somewhere - I cannot remember where - I read there was a small industry at that time in the painting of ships for their owners or captains which visited Hong Kong. This was the time of tea clippers etc.. so may well have been a fairly thriving industry for a few talented painters.

Taikoo House on the Peak

Places shown in this photo:

I am doing research about the Taikoo Sugar Refinery and recently returned from London where I researched originaln Swire documents at SOAS archives and at Swire House.  This is a photo of the Taikoo House on the Peak that was constructed in 1890.  According to the records I saw, the land was located at "Peak Sec A of RB lot 7, Sub-Sec 1 of Sec A of RB 18, and was 47,174 sq ft.  The Swires secured at 75 year lease from the crown for this land in 1882 and 1888 at a cost of  $8,500.00.  The house was built in 1890.

Prisoners in cangue and policeman

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1880

Photo supplied from John Breen's private collection.

There is also a copy of the same photo in the Royal Asiatic Society collection in London.

A Bonhams catalogue dates it to the 1880s: http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/11946/lot/28/

The number on the policeman's collar is 132 - can anyone identify the year from that?

I'd also be very interested to know if anyone recognises the location.

Regards, David
