Lau Fau Shan Police Station c.1966

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1966
Places shown in this photo:

I guess I took this in 1966 but cannot remember the exact date.

The building is light blue and white as constructed, and the two look-out turrets appearing in later photographs had not yet been added. I think the look-outs were constructed soon after the border incidents of 1967 during the 'Cultural Revolution'.

The flag pole has also been repositioned in later photographs, probaby to make it higher and more visible. In this picture, part of the Union Jack can be seen fluttering just above the roof parapet on the right of the building.

No. 8 Police Station (1st Generation) [1870-1895]

Date Place completed:
c.1870-01-01 (Month, Day are approximate)
Date Place demolished:
c.1895-01-01 (Month, Day are approximate)

The first No. 8 Police Station was built here in 1870, and stood on Po Yee Street, formerly known as Station Street. Upper Station Street is an adjoining diagonal street leading up to the Mid-Levels. The 1894 plague broke out in the streets of the Tai Ping Shan area, a densely populated Chinese slum with appalling sanitary conditions. To wipe out the plague virus, the Government tore down all the buildings in that area, including the No. 8 Police Station, which was relocated to the nearby Hospital Road.

Old Wong Nai Chung Gap Police Station [c.1909-1949]

Date Place completed:
c.1909-11-30 (Year is approximate)
Date Place demolished:
c.1949-11-30 (Month is approximate)

The Old Wong Nai Chung Gap police station no longer stands today, it was demolished post WW2 to make way for a private residence, which is now one of Stanley Ho's houses.

This Police Station was a pivotal structure that controlled Wong Nai Chung gap, and thus Hong Kong Island. It was situated on the 4-way crossroads that led to all 4 quarters of the Island. This effectively was the commanding structure of the battle of Wong Nai Chung gap; whoever held it, held the gap.
