This is the corner of Lockhart Road and Luard. The 'Lily' Bar is the site of the present-day 'Old China Hand'

By '72, the 'San Diego Bar' had become the 'Butterfly Club-Topless', and the 'United Nightclub' was the 'Mini Club' (also topless). Earlier, in the mid-60s, the 'San Diego' was the 'Honeymoon Bar' (the lower part of the sign with the two hearts was not changed)

Here is another of the photos I took in July,1972. If I am correctly remembering, I'm standing on the corner of Lockhart and Luard, looking down Lockhart towards Fenwick. There is the Ocean Bar on the right. In a 1967 photo here, the Ocean Bar,and the United Nightclub appear to be on the same side of the street-but in 1972, the United was next door to the Mini Club. I spent a lot of time in that Mini Club, and would sometimes find myself spending the night in the "Lucky Apartment" (I still have the card) at 87 Lockhart Road, "upstair United Bar".

I spent a week in Hong Kong in July of 1972. Being only 19, this is the area I gravitated to right away-I probably went into every place in the photos. I've spent the whole evening "walking" around this place via Google, and it's pretty much unrecognizable, but I see the same exact "Tattoo" sign at about 77 Lockhart Road, except that it is now 'Rickeys',instead of 'Pinky Yan'. If I am oriented correctly,in this photo I think I am standing at the corner of Lockhart and Luard, looking down Lockhart, with the Harbor on my right.

Looking down Luard Road from corner of Lockhart Road. Ocean Bar was apparently a favourite of submariners (among others, I'm sure).(http://www.usstunny.org/content/view/43/45/)

Received by email:

Here is a photo of bomb-scarred western end of Wanchai taken in 1945. The two major buildings on the waterfront (i.e. Gloucester Rd) are the former China Fleet Club on the cormer with Arsenal St and the Sailors' Home and Missions to Seamen on the corner with Fenwick St. The Chinese Methodist Church at the junction of Hennessy and Johnston Rd is in the centre of the photo.

What a bleak view of Wanchai, no sign of people or transportation. Was the photo taken during a bombing raid, sending everyone to find cover?
