Old Pokfulam Reservoir [1863-1978]

Date Place completed:
c.1863-01-01 (Month, Day are approximate)
Date Place demolished:
c.1978-01-01 (Month, Day are approximate)

The very first dam in Hong Kong was built at Pokfulam. A masonry dam was built across "Pokfoolum" valley to collect rainwater. For the transport of water to Victoria, a ten-inch cast-iron pipe was laid from the reservoir along todays Pok Fu Lam Road to finally Bonham Road. The work was finished in 1863, the reservoir had a capacity of 2 million gallons (9100 m3). The dam was near the (todays) Jockey Club  PHAB Centre, the reservoir stretched out to near Douglas Castle.

In 1978, the old dam was demolished in construction works.

簡述:The photograph shows work in progress on the dam. The reservoir was built in 1883 as the first stage in the complex system of waterworks designed to provide the city of Hong Kong with adequate water supply. Since Hong Kong has always depended on rainfall for its water supply, the construction of new reservoirs had to keep pace with Hong Kong's growing population.

Monument at Lam Tei Irrigation Reservoir [1957- ]

Date Place completed:
1957-03-28

Seems that agriculture was quite important back in 1957. Otherwise, why was the governor invited for the opening ceremony?

Today, there is not much to irrigate, but I still saw maintenance worker there yesterday (2019-2-1). I wonder what the water is used for.

The monument is located below the dam, on the east side.

Tai Tam Intermediate Reservoir [1908- ]

Date Place completed:
c.1908-01-01 (Month, Day are approximate)

Originally known as the Tytam Intermediate Reservoir, it was constructed between 1904 and 1908 according to PWD Reports of those years. Additionally, "for dam safety reasons, the north section of the spillway has been lowered in 1977, resulting in today's indented appearance of the crest of the dam" ( www.aab.gov.hk/form/AAB138-14-B-eng.pdf ).
