When did the "via Siberia" mail route begin?

I'm trying to help a friend date an old postcard that was sent from HK to their family in Britain. Unfortunately the stamp is off, so there's no postmark, but they note it is marked "via Siberia".

Does anyone know when that mail route started?

They guess it was sent around 1905-08.

Thanks & regards, David

Why the Hell-ships?

During the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong many POWs were transported on Hell Ships to Japan to do forced labour. Altogether, there were six transport drafts, including SS Lisbon Maru, and the SS Naura Maru?

Why were these particular individuals send to Japan on the hell ships, while others lived out the war in Hong Kong's POW camps?

I have read that following the fall of Hong Kong all prisoners were obliged to sign a document to say they would not escape? Those who did not sign were sent to Japan.

Can anyone corroborate this explanation?

What to do with old HK photographs

Years ago I was given about a dozen small black and white photographs taken in Hong Kong circa July 1946.

I have already posted most of them on this website.

I am getting on in years and am thinking that they need to go to a useful home for preservation.

My first thought is the HK Public Records Office. Can anybody offer other suggestions?

Morrison Hill Gap Road

Morrison Hill Gap Road appears in Jurors lists at the beginning of the 20th century .... I know where Morrison Hill Road is, and Wanchai Gap Road ... but where is this? I've found a rather nice little advent for 'the cheapest houses in the Colony' ... 4 room houses with offices ('necessary offices') for $40 per month (c.1903)

Name of Cox's Road

Any one know the name of Cox's Road come from? I found two names from "Hong Kong Governemnt Reports Online":

1) Lieut. R. C. C. Cox of 27th Inniskillings and became A.D.C. of HK Governor

2) John Samuel Cox, JP who became Justice of Peace in 1883. He together with a group of owners of land at kowloon Point (Tsim Sha Tsui) including the famous C.P. Chater wrote to the government to give comment of the Bill of Municipal Rate ordinance in 1885.

3) James Henry Cox, JP who also became JP in 1883

Please help send these home

I bought a collection of photos recently, hoping they'd have lots of views of Hong Kong. Instead they're almost all photos of people, that really belong in a family album. I'd rather see them back with the family, so I'm hoping one of Gwulo's readers can help put them in touch.

We're looking for the family of this lady, Marie Shelley, formerly Marie Baglin:
