Pillboxes and Lyon Lights around the coast of Hong Kong island

The following post is courtesy of Rob Weir. He describes the pillboxes the British built around Hong Kong's coastline in the lead-up to the Japanese invasion. Over to Rob:

Re-numbering of Queen's Road Central in the 1960s

On a 1911 map (Plate 3-4, Mapping Hong Kong), the even numbers start with 2, Queen's Road Central (QRC), the Grand Hotel, between Ice House & Duddell Streets.

Today that site is 8, QRC.

It looks as though the re-numbering happened some time in the 1960s. I guess it was triggered by the construction of the Hilton Hotel (2, QRC) and Beaconsfield House (4, QRC) in the early 1960s.

If anyone can confirm the date the re-numbering happened, please let us know.

Netherlands Trading Society 1930's

Please do anybody know the address of Netherlands Trading Society (Nederlandse Handel-Maatschappij N.V.). in Hong kong in 1930's (1934).

In de first week of June I will (hope) visit this address (of the former office/building), because my grandfather worked there.

In advance thank you for any reaction.

Yours faithfully,

Milly (from The Netherlands)

Lyttelton Road 1, Basilea Terrace

Do you have old pictures (1930's) of this place or area? It is important for me because my father was grown up there.

I will visit the place in the first week of June this year.

In advanced I hope to see your reaction.

Kindly regards, Milly (from The Netherlands)file:///Users/Pieter/Desktop/Afbeelding%201%20-%20versie%203.jpg

Empty houses Hong Kong

I'm a student at HKU looking into empty and abandoned houses in Hong Kong. I've found Dragon Lodge and the obvious ones, but I was wondering if any one has some suggestions of areas to look. My partner and I are trying to stick to the area around the Peak. Streets or general suggestions welcome!

City of Darkness Revisited - a new edition of the Kowloon Walled City classic

Ian Lambot co-wrote the well-known book about Kowloon Walled City, "City of Darkness". Here I ask Ian about the new and expanded edition, "City of Darkness Revisited".

David: The book is full of beautiful photos - do you have a favourite?

Ian: Where to begin! Should it be the aerial image I took one misty evening in, I think, 1989, which now appears all too regularly – and almost invariably without permission – on any website about the Walled City you care to mention?
