Help with history exhibit on the Peak

Hi,

I've been hired, after David's introduction, to be the historical consultant on the history of the Peak for an exhibition.

Would any of you in Hong Kong be willing to loan your photos or any artifacts ?

hfsiu, I especailly know that you have a lovely collection of photos and wonder if you would be willing to lend them out ?

e.g. Did you ever buy this photo ? http://gwulo.com/node/5600

Thanks,
Annelise

Flying Squirrels in Hong Kong?

I came across a Chinese language web site a few weeks ago which described a cave in a coastal region of Hong Kong as a "flying squirrel cave" and almost  a few words later as "bat" cave. Have flying squirrels ever been reported from Hong Kong? Squirrels - yes.

Also, the "holy grail" of Hong Kong mystery animals - the photo of the 1940/41 Hong Kong dugong. Please,God,where is it?!

Gwulo in 2014

Before we look ahead to the new year, let me thank everyone who has contributed to Gwulo over the last twelve months - every day when I visit the website there is something new and interesting to read.

Then for 2014, my goal is to upgrade the website software. It's getting embarrassing, as I said the same thing in 2013, ... and in 2012! More details on last year, and my plans for this year, below.

I hope you'll keep reading Gwulo in the year ahead, and please keep sharing your stories and knowledge of old Hong Kong with us.

Best regards, David

2013

How did last year's plans turn out?

Exhibition: Photos of old Hong Kong

We're spoilt for choice at the moment, with four different exhibitions underway. (If you're reading this from outside Hong Kong, I've added some other ways to see these photos at the bottom of the page.)

This is the last message for 2013, so before we look at those exhibitions, let me wish you a very happy and healthy new year.

Regards, David

1. John Thomson's photos at the Maritime Museum

They have over eighty of Thomson's photos of Hong Kong and China on display, all taken within a year or two of 1870. The photos have been blown up so there is lots of detail to see. Here's a view of the Praya, with the hills looking very barren and imposing in the background:

Entrance to the exhibition is included in the price of the ticket to the museum, so allow enough time to visit both.

1966 Peak Road landslide

The CEDD's "When Hillsides Collapse" has a couple of photos of this landslide. They show a section of Peak Road just below / east of the junction with Guildford and Barker Roads had fallen away. The caption reads:

A section of the Peak Road near Magazine Gap collapsed during the rainstorm on 12 June 1966. As the road was the only route between the Peak and the rest of Hong Kong Island, residents of the Peak were temporarily isolated.

Merry Christmas, Hong Kong style

We've got several old Hong Kong Christmas cards in the photo galleries. Here's the oldest, from the early 1900s:

Merry Christmas 1900

The setting is a familiar scene for a Christmas card, but it was likely a new experience for the children. The card is titled

Structures on the South Coast of Lei Yue Mun Channel

Page 134 of “Mapping Hong Kong” shows an 1876 map of the sea defences at Lyemun Pass, today’s Lei Yue Mun Channel, at the eastern entrance to Hong Kong Harbour.

Governor of Hong Kong Rolls Royce

Hi, I am new to the site and find it very interesting as I spent sometime in Hong Kong in the 1980s on business.

I am extremely interested in finding pictures of the Governor's Rolls Royce as I am working with a company to produce a 1/43 model of the car.

If anyone ia able to assist it would be greatly appreciated as there are not many photos on Google to work from. From what I have found I presume the Rolls Royce was black, is this correct?

Many thanks in advance

Regards

Bob
