Tour of the Jewish Cemetery in Happy Valley

This tour is now full. Thanks for the incredible response! I'll organise another tour in late November or early December and let you know here.

By popular demand, I (Howard Elias) am organising another tour of the Jewish Cemetery in Happy Valley.

You'll find full details and how to register below, but if you have any questions, please let me know in the comments.

Rate Books redux

So my latest plan to digitise the original tax records, the Hong Kong Rate books, involves taking a class at one of the universities-which has accommodation available- and doing it as a class project. But I don’t have any contacts in the history departments of the various universities.

Any suggestions?

1500+ photos of 1972 HK by Nick de Wolf

Just thought I'd bring this collection to everyone's attention in case you weren't aware of it. 1500+ colour shots (un-edited, so there are quite a few dupes or out of focus etc) taken by a prolific photographer visiting HK in 1972. Lots of interesting stuff there; I've no idea whether they could be linked/used/integrated here..

Hong Kong Magistrates Court records 1910ish

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if such records are available and where and how I may go about accessing them?

Thanking all in anticipation.

New on Gwulo: 2018, week 33 - Part 2

Here's the second half of the summer update:

A book I've been waiting for impatiently is finally available: Barbara Anslow's wartime diaries are now available in print, under the title Tin Hats and Rice.

Barbara had just had her 23rd birthday when the Japanese attacked Hong Kong in 1941. Her diary follows her through the battle & surrender, the long internment, and the eventual liberation in 1945.

Barbara has added comments throughout the book, explaining any events and descriptions that might not make immediate sense to modern-day readers. She has also added material from her mother's and sister's accounts of the events, and rounded it off with an index of all the people mentioned.

Tin Hats and Rice will be invaluable reading for anyone who had a family member imprisoned by the Japanese, or who wants to learn more about Hong Kong's wartime history.

Painting of Opium Wars

Hi,

My name is Richard Muirhead, I have contributed to Gwulo before but I am now asking anyone if they know where, online or elsewhere I can view a colour print or painting of either the First or Second Opium Wars as I thought a decent colour picture would be suitable for the front cover of my soon to be finished book China and the West: Communication, Conflict and Progress which I hope to publish via lulu.com
