Barbara's London talk

I don't think this has been posted before, but I think there are still a few seats available for Barbara Anslows upcoming talk for the Hong Kong Society on November 19th in central London.

Help choose the cover for the second Gwulo book

Update, 26 Oct 2018: And the winner is ...

... the rickshaw cover.

Thank you to everyone who voted. Across Facebook, Gwulo and Twitter there were a total of 200 votes, with 78 for the children cover and 122 for the rickshaw cover.

Whichever photo you preferred, you can take a closer look when you see the book. Both photos are shown there, enlarged as double-page spreads.

The layout of the new book's cover will be very similar to the first book, but this time using a blue colour instead of red.

I've narrowed down the choice of photograph to these two, and would like your help to decide which one to use. Imagine you see the cover on a shelf in a bookstore, or on a website. Which one are you more likely to pick up to take a closer look?

Please leave a comment below with the word children or rickshaw to vote for your choice. (Or if you're reading this in the newsletter, please vote by reply email.) Here they are ...

St John’s Review of 1951-1952

Dear John,

21 Oct 2018 - Gwulo server crashed

At about midday today (Hong Kong time), the server hosting the Gwulo website crashed. It restarted automatically, but the databases wouldn't load.

The hosting company ran into several problems getting the databases working again, but think they have everything fixed now.

If you spot any missing content, or problems with the website, please let me know.

Regards, David

Kings Own Scottish Borderers?

Hello!

My Mum was born in Hong Kong in 1927 when her Dad was on a tour of duty with the KOSBs.

Could anyone tell me whether this is a photo of the KOSBs at Government House?' It seems to be a Scottish regiment at least.

Direction slabs along the Gin Drinkers Line

If you go walking in the hills behind Kowloon, you'll likely have seen raised, concrete slabs like these:

GDL direction slab

In this guest post, Rob Weir explains their background, and gives us a map of the 70+ slabs he's found in that area.

Introduction

The slabs were erected to help British troops find their way around a defensive system of trenches, lookouts and pillboxes, collectively known as the Gin Drinkers Line.

A document in the HKPRO (I think it was part of HKMS 100), dates their construction to late 1941:

SCMP archives

Has anyone tried to access the SCMP archive recently?

There used to be a link at the bottom of their website to the archive where you could do a basic search then buy a daily subscription to get full access. It was very handy as the word search was extremely good and accurate.

The link now only seems to apply to archives of the last three years. I am looking for issues in the early 1950s.

I have emailed them a couple of times to no avail. Not even an acknowledgement.

Thanks

ICAC in the 70's - particularly the Godber / Hunt cases

Hello - I am Karen Penlington (now Luard), daughter of Ross Penlington who was DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions in HK in the mid-70's and prosecuted both Peter Godber and Ernest 'Taffy' Hunt in 1974)...I am researching a book on the establishment of the ICAC in the 70's and would be very interested to talk to anyone in relevant government departments -  police force/public works department/legal department - in the 70's and 80's who observed or has a first-hand experience - or a credible opinion - of what it was to operate in HK pre and post the early days of the setting

This is the latest Jurors List we're making searchable - here's how to join in, it'll only take around 30 minutes of your time.

We'll take the previous year's spreadsheet, then work through it page-by-page and edit in any changes so it matches this year's Jurors List.
