Edgar was the second son of Amaro John and Maria Rita Reed. Before the war, Edgar was a chartered accountant in the Taxation Department of the Hong Kong Government. He and his brothers attended Diocesan Boys School, and Edgar went on to study at St. George's College, Weybridge, Surrey, along with his brothers Robert (Bobby) and Wilfred (Willie). They were all active in sports, especially in the fields of hockey, cricket, football and tennis. Edgar and Willie played in the Middlesex County hockey team. Edgar was killed alongside his brother Arthur at Jardine's Lookout during the battle of Hong Kong. His and Arthur's names are included on a war monument in Sai Wan.
