This photo shows a gathering of family and friends taken in front of the family home at 8 Broadwood Road in the summer of 1936, the year that Amaro John Reed passed away on January 31.  I don't know what the occasion was for this get-together that also included my maternal grandmother, Angelina (dos Remedios) D'Almada, and my mother's oldest sister Phyllis (D'Almada) dos Remedios and her son Ricardo.  Also at this gathering was Maria Rita (da Silva) Reed's relatives, Alfredo and Nenita da Silva and their daughter Vilma, and family friend Harry Gubbay.  Since my mother Belle i

Wilfred "Willie" Reed first took up the sport of hockey while studying at St. George's College in Weybridge, Surrey, with his two older brothers, Robert and Edgar.  Willie worked at the sport for nine years, eventually representing St. George's, and then being selected to represent Middlesex County, along with his brother Edgar. Willie played centre-half in his first county match in 1928. In the above Middlesex hockey team photo, Willie is seated at the far right, with his brother Edgar standing directly behind him.

Seeing the photos of Luna Park brought back many memories of the happy times my cousin Mary (Reed) Engesser and I had on our visits there with my parents. It was always a special treat for us to go there and enjoy the rides.  The roller coaster ride was my favorite, and my father indulged me with repeat rides each time!

Francis Oswald was the sixth son of Amaro John and Maria Rita Reed, born in 1913.  He was an investment accountant at Hong Kong Land.  Francis married Vera de Carvalho In October, 1941 at St. Margaret's Church.  His eldest brother Edgar was his best man and his other brother Arthur's daughter Mary was the flower girl.  The bride's best man was architect Al Alvares and her sister Ina de Carvalho was her bridesmaid. Tragically, Francis lost his life defending Hong Kong on

Arthur Augustus was the fourth son of Amaro John and Maria Rita Reed.  He attended Hong Kong University where he studied Engineering. He was in his last year when Ricci Hall opened, and he stayed till his graduation.  Arthur was Secretary of the Ricci Hall Students' Association and an active footballer. He joined China Light & Power Company after graduating as an engineer, and was an energetic worker in the St. Vincent de Paul Society.  Arthur married Marie Diniz on May 17, 1938 at Church of Christ the King in Shanghai, where Marie was from.

Stephen was the fifth son of Amaro John and Maria Rita Reed, born in 1910. Stephen attended Hong Kong University where he studied Arts and was very prominent in the Hostel and University.  He was a football "Green", captain of the University soccer team, and member of the 1st XI in cricket and hockey.  In Ricci Hall he served as treasurer, secretary and chairman.
