Photo taken by WR Fell in 1928 or 1929. His companions in other photos were often the shore-based Lt and Mrs Cresswell, so this may show Mrs Cresswell taking a photo of Lt Cdr Fell and her husband. Someone might be able to tell me which Wanchai street is shown.

Left of the Wanchai Ferry Pier is another, small one. My 2011 tourist map shows "Star Ferry To Tsim Sha Tsui" for both piers.

Holland-China Trading Company: Hong Kong, Johnston Road, Central Wanchai, VW T1 delivery van, ca. 1956 (original print)

Charles Gesner van der Voort had started his career in Rotterdam, at Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC). In 1938, he went to Shanghai for the firm. The Japanese interned him, and most other Dutch nationals, from 1943-45. In camp, he met his wife Nancy and they married after the war. After a leave in The Netherlands, they returned to the Orient, where Charles continued to work for HCHC in Hong Kong.

Wanchai, 1970

Text on Flickr:

This is the corner of Lockhart Road and Luard. The 'Lily' Bar is the site of the present-day 'Old China Hand'

By '72, the 'San Diego Bar' had become the 'Butterfly Club-Topless', and the 'United Nightclub' was the 'Mini Club' (also topless). Earlier, in the mid-60s, the 'San Diego' was the 'Honeymoon Bar' (the lower part of the sign with the two hearts was not changed)
