This aerial view from 1964 shows two kinks in the road, one of which appears in the ground level image with the bridge. Probably the top one nearer the station. However in this image, reclamation has started alongside the roadhouse site

Before the many crossings that now exist, only one bridge gave access to Tsing Yi Island. This was built as a joint cost project by the government, China Light & Power and other companies with interests on the island.

High Island Reservior construction

To combat fresh water shortages the government built the High Island and Plover Cove reserviors in the Sai Kung area by creating dams between islands and the mainland. For many years after the reservior came into service the so called "fresh water" flowing from it and issuing from domestic taps in Kowloon was very salty

In the 1970s the government commissioned a desalting plant to convert sea water to fresh water as fresh water supplies from China had become uncertain. However, the rapidily rising cost of fuel oil and an easing of problems over the border resulted in the plant being rarely run at full capacity. After closure the site has had many uses. Many people have assumed from its appearance that it was an electricity generating station.
