Jade Buttons?

The picture shows what I have been told are jade buttons that belonged to my great grandmother Ching Ah Fung. They certainly have a small extrusion of the back which is pierced and looks as if it could have been sewn to cloth to act as a button.

Family lore suggests they were a prized possession of hers.

Unfortunately a well meaning relative a long time ago had them mounted on this huge specially made brooch. I know the work was done in HK probably in the 1960s.

Any views or comments appreciated.

Maker's Mark

I recently noticed a post mentioning that C.W.Warren and Co had made gravestones and memorials.

This enlarged part of the picture was taken probably shortly after the death of my great grandmother Ching Ah Fung aka Ellen Olson in 1915 judging from the floral tributes and is close to her husband John Olson aka Jons Jacobsson in Happy Valley. He died in 1918.

The picture shows the right hand corner which bears the mark C.E.W.and Co HK.

This is a picture of the site where the plaque that commemorates my grandmother Annie Louisa Olson's gift of land to the home was placed. It is up near trees at top of rise.

Sure was a good view. No wonder it sold later.

Date was July, 1969. Apologise for quality. Must have been a duff box brownie that took the pic. Came across it when looking out some pics regarding an earlier post about the home.

Any info or history about the plaque appreciated. No info from present St Christophers.

Happy Valley Postcard

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):

This postcard is stamped and dated 1923 in HK. It was sent to London by a friend of my grandfather, John Olson. The arrows inserted cover pencil marks made on the original by the sender to show 13 Broadwood Road and above it 20 Broadwood Road know as The Towers.

The message on the reverse is to announce the sender's forthcoming arrival in London and to remind my grandfather of the good times they had enjoyed at No 13 and No 20. The postcard is in my possession.

It is perhaps some of the experts comparing it with the colour picture posted earlier of unknown date.

I've been trawling through eBAY recently, and found this. We're usually looking at the photo on the front of the postcard, but this time it's the back that's more interesting. I'm pretty sure it was sent in 1907 by a relative of Sean, one of our regular contributors.

Here's the text:

Dear Miss O'Sullivan,

I wonder how you would like to live out in the East?

Which reservoir

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):

Has anybody got an idea which reservoir this is?

The picture was taken in the early to mid 20s by my great aunt Ethel Olson and on the back she has written: "The reservoir taken at dusk. Getting quite an expert with the camera".

At that the time the picture was taken she was probably living at Broadwood Road.

Olsons at Happy Valley Picture 3

This is a comparison picture I did. The older man wearing a boater is definitely my great grandfather John Olson. He is set next to what we think is a younger version of him.

This is the left hand half of the previous group picture.

If anybody is interested I can post two more pictures. They are of the two halves of the group picture posted earlier and are of better quality if people need them for identification purposes.

This is a big blow up from a scan but may show John in boater at back with Ching Ah Fung below and daughter Elizabeth. Jill Fell found this picture in the same book.

Where was this picture taken ?

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1917

Knowing how good some people are at identifying places I wonder if anybody can put a name to the place on this picture.

Somewhere in my family pictures I have seen another which shows the trees more clearly going down the centre of the road. I think I have also seen a similar colour postcard of the road on my various web jaunts.

The picture is of my great grandfather John Olson and was taken in 1917/18 orpossibly for his 80th birthday in 1918. If it helps John was living at 98 Wanchai Road at the time.

Many thanks,

Sean
