More on where is this

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1920

Thanks very much for identifying the location of the picture. As you ask I have uploaded the other picture. On th reverse it says: "This is near our flat the childrens' playground". The couple in the picture are my great aunt and uncle, Charles and Ellen Olson. He was a director of Thoresens Shipping as far as I know until he left HK in the late 20s.

Charles W Olson  and Ethel also lived at 13 Broadwood Road in 1913 and I think that house was probably the property of my grandfather John Olson or perhaps my great grandfather who was also named John Olson.

Bungalow by the sea

Here is another picture of the bungalow and on the right hand side you can just see two headlands. Hope this helps.

Where is this?

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):

The reverse of this photo, which is from family archives, says: "Do you recognise this spot, Arrow denotes our flat". What is left of the arrow is on the top left hand corner which I have cropped away.

It would be good to identify the area or road. Many thanks.

If you know the nationality of this gentleman, please could you leave a comment below?

He appears as in the history of John Olson. They must have been good friends, as Petersen was appointed as executor of Olson's will.

Historian Carl T Smith wrote about Petersen in his article "The German speaking community in Hong Kong 1846-1918". The first mention of Petersen is in the section "Taverns, Boarding Houses, Cafes and Hotels":

National Tavern [????-????]

This is linked to the John Olson story - he was the publican of this Tavern for many years.

Initial discussions of its location placed it much further west, based on an address given as "292, Queen's Road West". Today, that address is for a building on the corner of Centre Street and Queen's Road West in Sai Ying Pun.

13 Broadwood Road [????-????]

The location is approximate, as currently there is no #13. Instead the current numbers in that area are: 10 (Villa Rocha), 12 (The Atelier), 18 (Villa Lotto), 20 (Broadview Villa).

Notes from Sean:

13 Broadwood Road which was the home of my great uncle Charles W. Olson until 1927 or perhaps a little later.

The Towers, Broadwood Road [1916-????]

Date Place completed:
1916-05-22

The location and date are rough guesses, based on the photos from Sean, and this entry he found in the Carl T Smith records:

July 15, 1933. SCMP: "The Towers" on a ridge above Broadwood Road at Happy Valley, built by the late Mr. C. E. Warren, and after his death occupied by his family for some years. Sold at auction to Messrs. Kwong Ning and Tam Man-Shiu, $45,000. Crown Lease May 22, 1916.

Sean notes:

It is incorrect when it says the Warren family lived there after Charles Warren died. It was sold about 1924.

St Joseph's School class picture?

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1915

This picture is of a class or group at St Joseph's School probably taken around 1915. The pupil on the right of the picture with the green ring around him may be one of my uncles as the snap is in our family collection. However, if anybody can identify anybody or has anything to say about the picture I would be interested to hear.

Happy Valley 1923

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1923

Was interested to see the recent picture of Happt Valley. Here is one from my family collection. It was sent to my grandfather John Olson in 1923.

Things changed a bit!

The house with the mark above it it 13 Broadwood Road which was the home of my great uncle Charles W. Olson until 1927 or perhaps a little later. Above it on the right on the ridg is The Towers a picture of which I posted some time ago.
