Soldiers

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):

Came across the picture in family archive. Man second from left is identified as J. Olson who was my grandfather. Was this the local defence force as the picture was definitely taken before, during or just after the First World War?

I know that as my grandfather left HK in 1923.

Can anybody identify any of the others who might have living relatives who I might contact for further research? Also where was the picture taken?

Many thanks,

Sean

Marine Lot 111 [????- ]

Several times in the John Olson story there have been mentions of the family living at 98 Wanchai Road. It's not clear exactly where that number is today, but it should be somewhere near the junction with Johnston Road - point A on the map:

Anybody got any ida what it is or where it might be? Sorry about the quality but can't get any more out of it on my primitive pic editor.

Thanks,

Sean

Thanks philk and apologies for not getting back sooner.

The land, which according to the late  Dorothy Olson, who died in July 2009, had originally been owned by John 1 and was the last tangible Olson link to Hong Kong.

I understand that the orphanage has moved and a high rise apartment block stands on the site.

Another mystery picture

Here is a final mystery. I presume it is from Macau but if it wakes up any memories I would appreciate it. Sorry for the quality.

Final Harbour Picture

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):

This is the final picture and may answer a lot of questions. Is it Macau or Canton. It is from the same set as all the others.

Thanks to all you experts for whatever turns up.

Another harbour view

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):

This is another view of the same harbour. There is a possibility it could be Macau or Canton. I think my great grandfather - a sailor - travelled from Lisbon which may make it likely that he went to Macau. I also know that he had dealings in Canton.

St Christopher's Home

Thanks for the information regarding St Christopher's Home. Pictures here are of the then Anglican Bishop of HK - Gilbert Baker - unveiling the plaque which is below. in July 1969.

Hope it is still there!

Given the money involved when the home was sold perhaps the family might have been better advised to hold on to the land!
