Lena Lodge / Enchi Lodge (aka "Cherry 'Ole" or "Cheery 'Ole") [1921- ]

Date Place completed:
1921-01-01

This started with a photo from Sean Olson's family collection, with a handwritten note "Taken at Cherry Ole Fan Ling. Spent a week there with friends. Just off for a game of golf."

Apres Tennis

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1920

Tennis came up as a subject lately so when I came across this picture which shows the aftermath of tennis at The Towers, 13 Broadwood Road in about 1920 thought I would post it. In right hand corner you can just see racket and perhaps white tennis pumps.

No doubt a drink restored the energy. The man sitting in the middle is my great uncle Charles Olson who seems to be holding a bottle of Johnnie Walker in his hand. The drinks table looks reasonably stocked.

Cherry Ole and car

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1920

David,

Found this picture with the picture of Cherry Ole so called. Could be my aunt's scrawl and the name may be wrong. Agree the house looks as if it is not quite finished.

This car in driveway may belong to Charles and Ethel or it may belong to owners of house. Man on running board is unknown to me and I don't recall a picture of Charles and Ethel with a car with whitewall tyres.

It does not look cheap so assume the house was unfinished and not falling down if it belonged to owners.

Beach for Europeans/Bungalow by the sea

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1920

Here are four pictures. I am posting them because David recently speculated that the Bungalow By The Sea posting of some time back might in fact have been at Cheung Chau island.

Moddsey identified the Beach for Europeans picture I posted some time back and I have had another search and found the three pictures posted here. They show the beach, my great uncle Charles swimming and the headland in the background, he and his wife Ethel on the beach and Ethel posing with a sunshade on what may be a path above the beach.

House at Fan Ling

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1929

This is another picture I came across from my great aunt Ethel Olson's collection. She notes on the back: ""Taken at Cherry Ole Fan Ling. Spent a week there with friends. Just off for a game of golf."

Seems like the sort of place that somebody might know about.

Family gathering?

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1925

This is a picture taken at my great uncle and aunt's house at 13 Broadwood Road. Would date to mid 1920s. She is third from left. In an earlier post she is pictured with the man third from the right.

Has anybody a view as to whether it is a family snap - with the Chinese side of the family of which there must have been many though I have never been able to trace any - or a picture of servants. The child is not my aunt's as she never had children but may be one of the other European women pictured.

Thanks.

Identification?

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1920

This is a picture of my great aunt Ethel and is I think taken at 13 Broadwood Road judging by other pictures I have of her.

I wonder can anybody tell me by the way he is dressed whether the man with her is a servant or friend?

Thanks

Beach for Europeans

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1925
Places shown in this photo:

Came across this picture among some family pictures. On the back is written "One corner of the beach only for Europeans on the other side is one for the Chinese".

The handwriting is my great aunt's and I would date the picture to the early to mid 1920s.

Does it ring a bell with anyone and could she have been right?

Tennis in Hong Kong

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1920

Tennis in HK seems to have been popular. This picture was taken at either The Towers on Broadwood Road, which I think had two courts, or perhaps more likely 13 Broadwood Road which was the home of my great uncle Charles pictured here second from left, and his wife Ethel also pictured here. The boy in the middle is Reginald Warren and I think the year would have been about 1920. I cannot identify the two men.
