Macau's Protestant Cemeteries

It's hard to make a case for the joys of cemeteries without people looking at you a bit strange, and perhaps edging a bit further away. But let me try, with four reasons that cemeteries deserve your attention:

Photographs Relating to the Hong Kong Volunteers - Public Records Office

I've found an album of over 700 photos in the PRO archives, but one has to go through them one photo at a time.  So, I'm trying to make them easier to access.  I am just putting each photo URL sequentially - which is why some are blank.  This is just the first pass, so the Captions are not with the photos yet.

Summing up

Was Hong Kong, as a colony, a success?

"Was the French Revolution a success?"

"It is too early to tell."

Zhou Enlai, speaking 150 years after the event.

I think this question could be asked in different ways:

A success in terms of the original idea – a British trading post in China?

Life Magazine Online

I don't know if anything on this has been posted before, but Google appears to have all the back issues of Life Magazine online. Amazing to flick through and a quite useful resource. Here's one for instance from Oct 7 1940, bringing to life the many faces of the British forces in Hong Kong, the thin red line of empire as they called it, as they await war with the Japanese.

c.1930 St. Stephen's College

The introduction to the film clip reads:

The Hon. W. J. Southorn dedicating new wing of St. Stevens College at Stanley.

I've found a newspaper reference to W. T. Southorn opening the new college buildings in 1930. I wonder if that's the event shown in the film, or if there was a later visit to open an extension to the original buildings?

"First Photographs of Hong Kong" (27th Nov - 27th Dec 2010, Central Police Station Compound)

"The exhibition showcases treasured photo collections of Hong Kong in the 19th Century loaned from museums in Paris and London. With the support of the Development Bureau, the exhibition shall take place at the Central Police Station Compound. Over one hundred 19th century photos of Hong Kong shall be airlifted from France to be displayed in this 19th century building. This is a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to offer the public a glimpse of Hong Kong in its olden days.
