Once Upon A Time

Once Upon A Time, the book of old Hong Kong photos from local publisher FormAsia.

Aberdeen Harbour 1930s

I am looking at a photo of Aberdeen Harbour, taken in the 1930s, in the book 'Earth Then and Now: Amazing Images of Our Changing World'. On a hillside is a magnificent building, very long, with prominent end structures. The middle seems to be fronted by a long arcade or veranda.  I'm curious what it was - perhaps a hotel?

This is the latest Jurors List we're making searchable - here's how to join in, it'll only take around 20-30 minutes of your time.

The job is to take the previous year's list, then work through it page-by-page and edit in any changes so it matches this year's list.

Step 1. Check the comments below to see which was the last page someone has started typing. You'll work on the next page. eg if the last comment is 'started page 246', you'll be working on page 247.

St. Eligius' Church, Gun Club Hill Barracks

Does anyone know where further information may be obtained concerning the former St. Eligius' Church, located at Gun Club Hill Barracks which was demolished in the early 1990s to make way for the new military hospital on the site.

Any photos would be great.  Any details as to church denomination, consecration etc... would also be great.  I understand that it was the garrison church for the Hong Kong garrison - does anyone know if this was the case in fact, or perhaps it was only in respect of troops based Kowloon side.

Many thanks for any information available.

Ladies Directory 1907

I'm only half way through entering the data for the 1907 Ladies' Directory.  So  far I've only included the addresses, not the ladies names, but there were so many interesting things that I decided to post it.

Macdonnell Road and Kennedy Roads are well developed - with lots of house names I've never seen before.

Kowloon is also better developed, and Victoria View is listed on Garden Road, not Hankow Road.

An an intriguing building on Kennedy Road - Tang Yuen.  (Tang Garden?) Now which Tang would that be ?
