2010 ARTICLES:

Service In Hong Kong 1967/68 and 1972 - 1974

Hi I'm Des Lamble (almost 61 now ) I was serving on HMS Defender in 1967 until 1969.    In the early part of 1968 we arrived in HK and we had a problem, we where only due to be there for about four days, but we broke down, Seawater contamination of the furnis fuel oil feed system and we ended up in Hong Kong for about six weeks. For me it was great to spent this amount of time in HK.

This was at a time when a lot of American war ships where coming to HK to give some of their military R&R from the Vietnam War.

PRO Buildings - Peak

There a set of pages of research done by the Public Records Office entitled "Hong Kong Public Records Office Buildings - Peak"

There are 27 of them, and it is hard to know what is in each page, so I have extracted this list.  Click on the link below and you can then select the correct page number more easily.

Started 1905, pg191-205

This is the latest Jurors List we're making searchable - here's how to join in, it'll only take around 20-30 minutes of your time.

The job is to take the previous year's list, then work through it page-by-page and edit in any changes so it matches this year's list.

Step 1. Check the comments below to see which was the last page someone has started typing. You'll work on the next page. eg if the last comment is 'started page 200', you'll be working on page 201.

SCMP articles 1926-1938 about buildings

I found these in the PRO

The 1903 purge of Portuguese jurors

We've seen the number of Hong Kong jurors rise steadily, but then in 1903 there's this sudden drop:

Graph of Jurors, 1894-1904

And as we typed in the names, it was obvious that the biggest cuts hit the Portuguese jurors. eg on the 1902 list are 20 jurors surnamed 'Silva'. In 1903? Just 3.

Overall the number of Portuguese jurors fell from 182 to 38.

Why the Portuguese?

1904 Jurors List

[The list has been typed up by volunteers: Annelise, Carla, David, Grace, John, and Neville. Please help us type up the lists from other years - it takes less than 30 minutes to finish a page. Click here for details.]

Problems adding images - should be fixed

Several people have reported problems using the little camera icon to add photos to their text. Main problems are:

  • unable to select different sizes of the photo
  • if you try to go back to edit your text that shows a photo, the photo just shows as a tiny dot

I've spent some time looking into this, and think I've fixed it.

If you've had this type of problem in the past, please could you try it again and let me know if it's working ok, or if you still experience any problems?

Thanks & regards, David

Wartime stoves - two more areas found

Tally for the outing: one cooking area in good condition, one partial, and a python.

Python? The walk started with a warning sign: a python had been seen in the area and I should look after my dog and small children. No dog, and the girls were at school, but it added a bit of excitement to the day. I planned to make use of the cool weather and go for a stomp around the undergrowth in the valley behind Quarry Bay. Pythons beware!

I was looking for more of the wartime cooking areas that were built around there.
