1905: TST takes off

I've read before about the rapid growth of Tsim Sha Tsui (TST)  at the start of the 20th Century, and that certainly shows up in the Jurors Lists.

Here's how the number of jurors with a Kowloon address grows from 1896 to 1905:

Started 1906, pg195-210

This is the latest Jurors List we're making searchable - here's how to join in, it'll only take around 20-30 minutes of your time.

The job is to take the previous year's list, then work through it page-by-page and edit in any changes so it matches this year's list.

Step 1. Check the comments below to see which was the last page someone has started typing. You'll work on the next page. eg if the last comment is 'started page 200', you'll be working on page 201.

Hongkong's Irish Policemen - talk this evening, Monday, 24th Jan 2011

Next Monday evening there's an RAS (Royal Asiatic Society) talk. You may recognise the speaker, Ms Patricia O'Sullivan. She's asked a couple of questions on Gwulo's forum, and also helped typing up the 1905 Jurors list.

Unfortunately I won't be able to attend, but the talk looks interesting. Here's the RAS announcement:

Help identifying old house in 1978 TV series

I have always wondered about an old house used in a 1978 TVB series.  The 100+ episode series was called 強人 and it starred Chow Yun Fat and Paul Chu Kong as his brother.  One of my favorite actors, the legendary Shek Kin, was at his villanous best as their rich tycoon uncle.

The theme song for the series was sung by Roman Tam.  I recall seeing a music video for the song and I think it might have been filmed on the grounds of the same house.

"Error loading Zoomify"

[Posted here in case anyone else has the same problem]

Richard reports:

I am having trouble viewing images on the gwulo web site ........... I always get a message saying that there is an error loading Zoomify. Is this because I may have an outdated web browser ?

It might be the browser. It might also a problem with Adobe Flash, since Zoomify needs Flash to run.

So, the first few questions:

1. Has Zoomify recently stopped working for you, or has it never worked?

Xin Hai Revolution 100yrs

It would be great if you can write more about Xin Hai Revolution, since HK played an important role during that time too. Also, it's the 100 years anniversary of the revolution.

p.s It's nice to find this site, nice to meet you all.

bridges - Wanchai houses

Can anyone give me an idea of what a 'bridge' is in the context of a 1900's Wanchai house.  ... "on the first floor there was a bridge and when we got up to this we could see Tom, Dick and Harry on the first floor".  There's a bridge on the second floor of this house too .... Any light gratefully received!

A quick wrap-up for this year, and some ideas for next:

Lunch @ London ?

I've just arrived in London, and will be here for a few days before heading out to visit friends & family. I see several subscribers to gwulo.com have UK email addresses, and wondered if anyone would like to meet up for lunch on Friday or Saturday this week?

I know, that's New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, so just about the least likely days anyone is free! But if you are, please get in touch. I'll be checking email, and any comments here, or you can text / call my mobile: +852.9401.5251.

Regards, David
