Stories:
Victoria B.C., Canada - Daily colonist, Wednesday June 28, 1899
Andrew Marks, formerly a member of the USS Olympia's crew, murdered his bride of six days, and then turning the deadly revolver upon himself, blew out his own brains. He had left Dewey's flagship at Manila and engaged for a time there in the restaurant business, thus meeting a pretty French-Egyptian girl, Marie Terrade [daughter of Grille Jolicarton Terrade a prominent scientist of bone, Algeria] by name, a native of Bone, Algeria. She left Manila hurriedly, and selling his restaurant, Marks followed her to Hongkong, where they were married at St. John's cathedral by Canon Cobbold on the 22nd instant. Soon after the wedding the bride began to indulge an appetitie for wine explaining to her horrified husband that the failing was inherited. He endure her drinking for three days, and then finding her inebriated on his return home the sixth day after the wedding, ended her life and his own.
Andrew Charles More
There is a record of a burial of Andrew Charles More 3 December 1899 in the St John's Records
But the Andrew More whom I have been rearching died 3 December 1909 according to an entry in Ancestry in England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966, 1973-1995 and the probate date is 26 October 1910. The date on his headstone gives 1909.
Could the 3 December 1899 date refer to a son of his who coincidentally died on the same date in December as his father? It doesn't seem likely.
There is as far as I know no grave showing his name and a death in 1899.
1899 shows the following 3 Dec Burial Henry John Smith, Andrew Charles More, 15 Dec Frank Garvey
1909 shows the following 3 Dec Burial Henry John Smith, Andrew Charles More, 15 Dec Frank Garvey
Can anyone help?
I did the transcription from
Thank you for catching that.
I did the transcription from photocopied sheets at the PRO. Getting the correct date on the photocopied pages was quite a trick.
It looks like I mistook my handwritten 1909 for 1890 for the December pages. I’ll point them to the correct page in case someone has already refered to this page.
