Ugo Gonella was an architect in partnership with Ernest Manning Hazeland. Together they formed the company Hazeland & Gonella. Ugo Gonella appears in Tony Lam's list of accredited Hong Kong architects. St Margaret's Church at the bottom of Broadwood Road was his unique project. Ugo married Grace Thereza Murray, one of the five daughters of Patrick and Lucretia Murray. Patrick Murray gifted him one of his properties, rem. part. I.L. 1551. Grace predeceased Ugo aged only 32. If I understand Carl Smith's card no.

Wilfred Reed is the father of angie-r, on whose behalf I am posting some details of his life. Information about his brothers' role in the Battle for Hong Kong and his own role in safeguarding the female members of his family is given in the post on Robert Cyril Reed. Margaret Annie Bond, also mentioned on this site was great-aunt to the Reed brothers and Lucretia Murray, wife of Patrick, was their aunt. Amaro and Maria Reed were their parents. Willie Reed was an outstanding sportsman and played hockey for Middlesex.

Angela Niles has given me permission to upload some photographs of her family graves in St. Michael's Cemetery. This photo shows the grave of her father, Wilfred Reed and of her great aunt Lucretia Murray with her husband, Patrick Murray.

Not much information in the Carl Smith cards on Robert Reed that I can find. He married Anna Maria Diaz or Dias at the Roman Catholic Cathedral on 2 May 1861. [CS card 00135693GIF]  He was Protestant, but I don't think he is buried in the Colonial Cemetery at Happy Valley. Their daughter Lucretia Maria Reed was baptised on 24 February 1867 at the RC Cathedral at 38 days old. Anna Maria married Charles Bond after Reed's death. Lucretia married Patrick Murray.

One of the earliest residents of Broadwood Road is given in the Rate Books as Miss Margaret Annie Bond, a neighbour of my grandfather, C.E. Warren. Her house was no. 8 and called "Beaumont". Other Broadwood Road house owners at the time were C.S. Gubbay and Ellis Kadoorie, so I imagine Miss Bond was quite well off.  I wonder if anyone knows of any record of this lady or whether any photos of her exist.
