When the theatre first opened to business on December 23, 1968, it was named Tai On Theatre.  On December 23, 1976 its name was changed to Kam Ming Theatre.  The theatre was closed in the second half of 1995.  For the purpose of this page, the closing date is assumed to be September 1995.

Heung To (Island) Theatre / 香島戲院 [????-????]

Address: 190 Aberdeen Main Road, Aberdeen, Hong Kong.  Island Building is the current occupant at the site.

Island Theatre was built sometime before WWII, but the exact date is unknown.  Its operaion was temporarily suspended during the war.  As with its opening date, the date of closure is also not known though reported to be some time in the mid-1980s.  Until better information becomes available, no opening or closing date has been assigned for this page.

Seating capacity:  Based on the information from the sources, the initial capacity was likely 1,261 consisting of 801 on the lower level and 460 on the upper level.  Later on, 28 more seats were added to the lower level.  Another redevelopment result in 3 screens having a total capacity of 1,119 (339, 320 and 460).

Address: Castle Peak Road (Hung Shui Kiu) and Tan Kwai Tsuen Road intersection, southeast corner, Hung Shui Kiu, New Territories, Hong Kong.  Formerly Lai Hung Park, the current occupants are the Lai Hung Garden Blocks.

The Chinese name for the theatre was likely referenced to its immediate neighbour - a bridge (Kiu) on Castle Peak Road over a stream called Hung Shui (looks like an artificial channel from the air).
